An annual two day event of traditional activities such as medieval dancing, music, combat, joust, birds of prey medieval falconry display and jesters with many opportunities for interaction, whether in conversation with performers, craftspeople and re-enactors, or trying out armour, helmets, and weapons brought by the re-enacting groups.
Full Flight recreated medieval hunting and falconry to demonstrate how birds of prey were used to hunt in the 15th century.
The event that everyone was looking forward to was the long-standing joust tradition of two competitors thundering down the list on their horses, leveling their lances to strike each other on their shields. Because the welfare and safety of horses and riders are paramount, the lance tips are balsa, which still strikes hard on the shield, but shatters after a hard and skillful hit, but not into sharp shards that have the potential to kill or injure a horse or rider. The risk is reduced, but the skill, hits, and excitement are still the best of the sport.
My favourite were the crusaders.
The ring of steel, the clash of swords: ‘Field of Arms’ is where groups display their best in combat and arms. The day ended with the ‘Grand Melee’.
